Why We Start Every Interior Design Project With Questions

When most people imagine working with an interior designer, they picture mood boards, material samples and Pinterest inspiration.

While inspiration certainly has its place, at The Escapist + Co, our interior design process begins somewhere entirely different.

It begins with a conversation.

Before we discuss finishes, furniture or colour palettes, we want to understand how you live. Because the most successful interiors are never designed around trends, they are designed around people and how you want to feel.

Whether we're engaged for a full home renovation, kitchen renovation, bathroom design or complete furnishing project, our first priority is understanding the life that will unfold within the space.

The Purpose of an Interior Design Consultation

Many clients come to us with folders of saved images and carefully curated Pinterest boards. While these references can be helpful, they rarely tell the full story.

An image can show us what you are drawn to aesthetically, but it doesn't reveal how you move through your home, how your family functions, or what frustrations you experience every day.

This is why every interior design consultation at The Escapist + Co is built around asking thoughtful questions.

We want to understand what is working, what isn't, and how your home can better support the way you live.

Understanding How You Live

One of the first questions we ask every client is simple:

"Tell us about a typical day in your home."

Do you start your mornings slowly with coffee in the kitchen before the rest of the household wakes? Do children gather around the island after school? Do you work from home several days each week? Is the dining table used every night, or only when guests arrive?

These seemingly small details influence every design decision we make.

As a full-service interior design studio, we believe exceptional design begins with understanding the daily rituals that shape your life.

Because a beautiful home should feel as good at 7am on a Monday as it does when guests arrive on a Saturday evening.

Designing for Family Life and Entertaining

No two families live in exactly the same way.

Some clients love hosting large gatherings and require spaces that encourage connection and conversation. Others prioritise calm, privacy and retreat. Some households revolve around a busy kitchen, while others value separate spaces where family members can work, relax and recharge.

Understanding these family dynamics allows us to create custom interior design solutions that feel intuitive and deeply personal.

It's not simply about where furniture is placed. It's about creating flow, functionality and atmosphere throughout the home.

The result is a space that supports everyday life while still feeling elevated and refined.

Why Pinterest Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Pinterest is an incredible source of inspiration, but it often encourages homeowners to focus on individual rooms rather than the experience of the home as a whole.

A beautiful image doesn't tell you how a space feels to live in.

It doesn't show the natural light throughout the day. It doesn't reveal how a kitchen functions during a busy family breakfast or whether a bathroom layout works efficiently during the morning rush.

As residential interior designers, our role is to look beyond the image and design for the reality of everyday life.

Rather than recreating someone else's home, we create spaces that reflect our clients, their lifestyle and their aspirations.

Designing Homes That Stand the Test of Time

We believe timeless interiors are built through thoughtful planning, exceptional materials and a deep understanding of how a client wants to live both now and into the future.

This means considering how families may grow, how routines may change and how a home can continue to evolve over time.

Whether we're designing a luxury kitchen renovation, bathroom renovation or complete home transformation, our focus is always on longevity.

Our Approach to Luxury Interior Design

Luxury isn't defined by a particular style.

For us, luxury is thoughtful design.

It is a home that functions effortlessly. A space that feels calm, considered and deeply connected to the people who live there.

It is the confidence that every decision has been made with purpose.

Our role as a Sydney interior design studio is not simply to create beautiful rooms. It is to create homes that support the way our clients want to live, gather, entertain and retreat.

That process always begins with asking the right questions.

Every project begins with understanding the people behind the home.

Whether you're planning a home renovation, kitchen renovation, bathroom renovation or seeking full-service interior design in Sydney, our approach remains the same.

We listen first.

Because before we design your home, we want to understand your story.

They are shaped by daily rituals, family life, personal experiences and thoughtful design decisions that stand the test of time.

And that is where every great project begins.
